Napoli coach Francesco Calzona says his side are not ‘a real team yet, but they have room for improvement.’ The Partenopei travel to Spain to face La Liga giants Barcelona in the second-leg of their Champions League last 16 tie. Speaking with Sky Sport Italia, Calzona previewed the match and explained what he expects from the tie, explaining why his side still have work to do this season:
“Are we ready? I would say yes. We’ve had a few days to sort out ideas, although we haven’t worked extensively on the field due to various constraints. But I’ve seen the boys eager to perform well tomorrow.”
Regarding defensive strategies, Calzona emphasized the team’s evolving tactics: “Defending cannot rely solely on creativity, unlike the offensive aspect. While we’ve been conceding goals, we’ve gradually reduced opponents’ chances. It’s a slightly longer process, but I’m confident. I’ve seen the players recognize where we’ve gone wrong and are eager to improve.”
Reflecting on his satisfaction with the team’s progress over the past three weeks, Calzona, known for his perfectionism, remarked, “By nature, I’m never satisfied. We’ve done great work, but we have a lot to do to become a true team like last year’s. I don’t think we’ll reach that level, but we have significant room for improvement.”
Responding to Xavi’s remarks about Napoli, Calzona expressed gratitude for the Barcelona coach’s observations: “Xavi made important comments about us, and I thank him for that. He’s a great coach, and they are a great team. I don’t think they’re in crisis. They’ve had a healthy February, never losing a game, despite some absences. They are considered favorites playing at home, but I firmly believe in my team.”
Delving into tactical analysis, Calzona delved into Barcelona’s strengths, saying, “They have a clear identity, and Xavi stated they will continue doing what they know. They have many solutions, both in terms of personnel and tactically. We’ve studied this team in detail, hoping to contain them and become more cohesive ourselves. Currently, we’re not there yet, but if we do, the game could open up.”
During the press conference, Calzona also touched upon the talents of Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal and reflected on the importance of the upcoming match, emphasizing the need to rectify past mistakes and seize the opportunity for advancement.
