Inter’s Correa puzzle: A return to Lazio, termination of contract or Argentina

Start

Inter Milan face a significant dilemma regarding the future of Joaquin Correa. The Argentine striker, who recently returned from a loan spell at Marseille where he failed to make a significant impact, is not part of coach Simone Inzaghi’s plans for the upcoming season. As a result, the club is actively seeking a solution to part ways with Correa a year before his contract naturally expires.

Calciomercato confirm that Correa’s future remains uncertain, with Inter and his representatives working to find a new destination that satisfies all parties involved. Despite this, Correa continues to train under Inzaghi, aiming to stay in peak condition for the new season while awaiting the right opportunity. Inter’s inability to offload Correa is also hindering their pursuit of Albert Gudmundsson, who is edging closer to a move to Fiorentina.

Lazio have shown interest in re-signing Correa, but any potential deal would hinge on specific conditions. Juan Sebastian Veron, former Inter midfielder and current president of Estudiantes, has also hinted at the possibility of Correa returning to Argentina. Additionally, clubs like AEK Athens, Sevilla, River Plate, and some Turkish and Saudi teams have explored the feasibility of acquiring Correa, though none have made a concrete offer.

The financial aspects of Correa’s situation are challenging. Inter aims to avoid a financial loss by selling him before his contract expires on June 30, 2025. The amortization cost stands at nearly €8.5 million, and combined with his net salary of €3.5 million, the total cost for the 2024/25 season would be around €15 million.

One potential solution being considered is an early termination of Correa’s contract, which would save Inter approximately 6.5 million euros in gross salary. Although this option remains distant, it is not entirely off the table.

Veron commented on Correa’s situation, saying, “I was with Joaquin and we talked. He is still young. He feels he can take another step in Europe. Today, the truth is that it is very complex, very difficult. But football often lacks logic. I wouldn’t get my hopes up today; I would let him decide. The important thing is that he finds his path first. And then, as I told him, we are waiting for him at the club.”

Lazio’s good relationship with Correa’s agent, Alessandro Lucci, has opened the door for a possible return to the Biancocelesti. However, Lazio has made it clear that they would only consider the move if Correa resolves his contract with Inter and becomes a free agent.

Several clubs have shown interest in Correa, including River Plate, AEK Athens, Sevilla, and some Turkish and Saudi teams. However, none have made a decisive move yet. The situation remains fluid, and an early contract termination could change the dynamics, potentially leading to new opportunities for Correa.

Inter Milan’s challenge is to find a resolution that minimizes financial loss while allowing Correa to continue his career elsewhere. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining the Argentine striker’s next steps.
