Lazio’s Castrovilli faces another setback: Meniscus Injury requires surgery

Start

Gaetano Castrovilli’s unfortunate run of injuries continues as the Lazio midfielder is set to undergo surgery for a meniscus tear. The 26-year-old Italian, who joined Lazio on a free transfer from Fiorentina last summer, sustained the injury during a recent training session before the match against Cagliari.

Calciomercato report how Lazio’s medical staff officially announced that Castrovilli has undergone clinical and instrumental examinations at Villa Mafalda Clinic. The tests revealed a lesion in the medial meniscus of his left knee, which occurred during a training match at the S.S. Lazio Training Center. The player will undergo arthroscopic surgery in the coming days.

This latest setback adds to Castrovilli’s already extensive injury history. Since the 2021/22 season, he has endured two knee surgeries and a calf injury, resulting in over 450 days away from the pitch. His current season has been limited to just 120 minutes of play across six brief appearances, and he was not included in Lazio’s UEFA Europa League squad.

The recovery time for this meniscus surgery is estimated to be around 40 days, potentially sidelining Castrovilli for the remainder of 2024. This prolonged absence poses a challenge for Lazio, who must now consider their options in midfield.

The club is evaluating whether to reintegrate Elseid Hysaj into the squad list or give an opportunity to Akpa Akpro, at least until January when the transfer window reopens. At that point, Lazio may look to strengthen their midfield with a high-profile signing.
