Marcus Thuram: “I feel like a strong, technical striker who scares defenders”

Marcus Thuram, the dynamic striker for Inter Milan and the French national team, has opened up about his journey in Italian football and his self-perception as a player in a recent interview with GQ magazine. Named GQ’s Man of the Year for 2024, Thuram shared insights into his decision to join Inter and his rapid rise to prominence in Serie A.

Reflecting on his move to Italy, where his father Lilian had made his mark in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Thuram explained, “Accepting Inter’s offer was an easy choice. Before coming to Milan, I used to watch my future teammates on television, seeing that they were an incredibly strong team. They proved it by reaching a Champions League final.”

The French forward pinpointed a pivotal moment in his Inter career, stating, “My growth is a combination of many good things that have happened to me. I believe that the goal against Milan in last season’s first derby was the beginning of everything. It was a special match, and people didn’t know me very well yet. Scoring in that way was like introducing myself to Inter fans.”

Thuram’s confidence has grown with Inter’s success, particularly after winning the Scudetto. He remarked, “Winning the Scudetto gave me strength. We made many sacrifices and deserved to win it. But that victory wasn’t the end of something; we can do even better, and we have important goals.”

When discussing his playing style, Thuram exudes self-assurance. “I feel like a strong, technical player who knows how to dribble past opponents, but what makes me unique is my physicality,” he said. “There are very fast players who aren’t particularly strong, and there are strong ones who aren’t so fast. I have both characteristics, which scare defenders.”

The striker also expressed his love for playing at San Siro, Inter’s iconic stadium. “Playing at San Siro is truly fantastic. I think it’s one of those things that children dream of when they start playing. San Siro gives me a boost that I’ve never had in any other stadium,” Thuram enthused.
