Dries Mertens is edging every closer to a contract extension with Napoli following reports that he has met with club President Aurelio De Laurentiis. The 34-year-old has a contract with the Azzurri until June this year and talks over a new deal were thought to have broken down.
Il Corriere dello Sport report that De Laurentiis visited with Mertens at his home, a few days after Napoli’s 3-2 defeat to Empoli.
Its reported that he remained there for an hour and discussed a new contract for the Belgium international who will take a large wage cut in order to remain in Naples.
Mertens reportedly earns €4.5m per season with Napoli retaining an option to extend for one year, which they di not intend to activate. Instead, they will pen a new deal on a reported €1.2m per season contract which will include a further one year extension for the 2023-34 season.
