Álvaro Morata, captain of the Spanish national team, has finally received the Zarra Trophy, recognizing him as the top Spanish goal scorer of the 2023-24 season. The award ceremony, originally scheduled for Monday’s MARCA gala, was postponed due to Morata’s recent injury during training with AC Milan.
After undergoing successful medical tests in Italy, Morata welcomed MARCA’s director, Juan Ignacio Gallardo, to the national team’s training camp in Las Rozas to receive his well-deserved accolade. The striker, who earned this honor for his impressive goal tally with Atlético Madrid last season, shares the award with Borja Mayoral.
Expressing his gratitude, Morata stated, “First of all, thank you for coming here to give me the award. It’s a source of pride, especially sharing it with Borja, who deserved to be with us in the national team, but injuries are a part of football that we never want to happen. I hope he’ll be scoring goals again soon.”
The AC Milan forward reflected on the significance of the award, saying, “I insist that receiving these types of awards fills me with pride. Since you’re little and start playing football, you see these awards and dream of having them, of being at the galas. I’ve already received some awards from the national team.”
Morata also shared a personal anecdote about his admiration for past winners: “I went to Raúl’s house and saw that he had several, and I said to myself, I wish I had one. As soon as I go home, I’ll put it in a special place because it’s very important, for its history and for the players who have already won it like Joselu, Iago… friends and people I admire and respect.”
Addressing his recent injury scare, Morata reassured fans, “Of course I’ll continue scoring goals with my head or whatever. It doesn’t matter how you score them or if they go in off the crossbar or not. Everything is fine now. Thank God it was just a scare, and I’ll train on Thursday and hope to play on Friday against Denmark.”
