Palladino: “A tremendous performance for 44 minutes, the best game since I’ve been here”

Fiorentina manager Raffaele Palladino spoke to DAZN following his team’s dramatic 3-2 defeat against Atalanta at the Gewiss Stadium. Despite the loss, Palladino expressed satisfaction with his team’s overall performance.

When asked about the match and if there was a mental lapse, Palladino responded, “I would say that the mental aspect has nothing to do with it. For 44 minutes, we put in a tremendous performance, putting them in difficulty and even having chances to go 3-1 up after taking the lead twice. Then in a minute and a half, we committed two naive mistakes, but I’m very happy with the boys’ performance and I take many positives from it. This is the best performance since I’ve been here; I liked the whole team throughout the match. There’s regret for those two minutes, but this match will help us grow.”

Regarding where he felt most disappointed about the result, Palladino explained, “Certainly, Retegui’s first goal came from an evident individual misreading on our part. For the second set-piece, they arrived with great physical quality because they perhaps have only two players under 1.75m, to give you an idea. Today we defended well as a team and attacked in the same manner. Are we leaving with a defeat? True, but the team is growing, and it takes a bit of time because only this week have I worked with the entire squad. Clearly, we need to improve, and that’s my job and my staff’s job.”

When asked if he sees the learning process getting closer to his style of football, Palladino affirmed, “Absolutely. When a new player arrives, it takes some time to assimilate team and game mechanisms, even just from markings that can be zonal or man-to-man. Even Pongracic, coming on as a substitute, did well, to give an example. I see growth in individuals and in the team, putting in a great performance against Atalanta’s starters. I liked the team; there’s a lot to improve, but we’ll work during the week to get better and better.”
