Florian Thauvin, the star forward of Serie A leaders Udinese, is experiencing a career renaissance at the age of 31. The French World Cup winner, who speaks four languages, has found a new lease on life in Udine after a challenging stint with Tigres in Mexico.
Thauvin now wears the iconic number 10 jersey for Udinese, following in the footsteps of club legends like Totò Di Natale and Rodrigo De Paul. Despite his status as a team leader, he remains humble and approachable, often joking with teammates and treating them to meals.
“I feel a great responsibility as the captain of the team. But I also feel the strong trust of the club, the environment, and my teammates. I’m very happy,” Thauvin says, mixing Italian with occasional Spanish phrases.
When asked about his resurgence at 30, Thauvin explains:
“It’s simple. I have a clear mind. I play calmly. I feel very good physically. I work every day from the start of the season to always be at my best. Now I feel at my best level, and I want to help the team dream.”
Despite having played for high-profile clubs like Marseille and Newcastle, Thauvin feels at home in the small city of Udine:
“My family and I live very well here, we’re in the city center. People let you live, they keep you calm, they encourage you, but they always respect you. There’s great discretion, and I can even go to a pizzeria peacefully.”
Thauvin credits the team’s success to a positive atmosphere and the tactical acumen of coach Kosta Runjaic:
“It’s a beautiful moment. An incredible feeling. We’ve been working well from the start, there’s a good atmosphere, and we play with clear minds.”
He adds, “I can assure you that our coach is great. He’s very good tactically. He always wants to play the ball and go forward, to attack.”
When asked about the potential return of Alexis Sanchez to the team, Thauvin welcomes the addition:
“We’re waiting for Alexis. He can bring additional quality to this team.”
While content at Udinese, Thauvin acknowledges the natural ambition of professional footballers to strive for the best. He remains open to future opportunities while focusing on his current success.
As for recognition from his French national team peers, Thauvin reveals:
“Olivier Giroud, with whom I’m great friends, congratulated me. He was happy about my double at Parma and everything I’m doing. Goals and assists are my joy.”
