Monza’s Serie A campaign faces a critical juncture as they prepare for an away match against Torino, a team that has also struggled recently. With three consecutive losses to tough opponents like Atalanta, Milan, and Lazio, Monza finds itself at the bottom of the league table alongside Venezia. Head coach Alessandro Nesta understands the urgency of the situation and is determined to turn things around.
In a press conference ahead of the match, Nesta reflected on the team’s recent performances, stating, “We have reflected on the last matches and especially how to improve our performances. We need to score goals and maximize the chances we create.” This emphasis on improving offensive output highlights Monza’s struggles in finding the back of the net.
Injuries continue to plague the squad, with Nesta confirming that they will be without midfielder Matteo Pessina due to a partial hamstring tear. “It will take some time for him to recover,” he noted. However, there may be a silver lining as he mentioned that Stefano Sensi could potentially return to action. “Forson has returned, but Ciurria’s recovery will take longer,” he added.
Nesta also provided an update on Daniel Maldini’s return from international duty, expressing optimism about his contributions: “Maldini has come back well after his commitments with Italy; we expect some goals from him—at least 7 or 8.”
When discussing tactical adjustments, Nesta acknowledged the possibility of switching to a four-man defense. “A four-man defense is definitely a good Plan B. We tried a three-man midfield which worked well until Pessina got injured. Points are earned in both penalty areas; we need to be strong there,” he said.
Turning his attention to Torino, Nesta remarked on their current struggles: “They are also not having an easy time and will be looking to give their best performance. They are a very good team.”
Nesta addressed recent changes within the club, particularly with Bianchessi stepping in as sporting director for the first team. “We are last and everyone is under scrutiny. I respect what has been decided. Results matter, and consequently, judgments about each of us change,” he stated candidly. He also reflected on his own journey as a coach: “Becoming a coach was my choice; no one asked me to do it. This sport is my life.”
As for striker Andrea Petagna, Nesta confirmed his importance to the squad: “Petagna is an important player who was signed for a significant amount by Monza. He will definitely help us moving forward.” He also mentioned that midfielder Bianco is available despite experiencing some fatigue while playing with the Under-21 team.
