FIGC approves title play-offs beginning 2022-23

The FIGC has officially approved changes to the Serie A format that will include a title play-off, if teams are level on points. The change will come into effect from the  2022-23 season and was made formal during a meeting of the Federal Counsel yesterday.

If two teams finish level on points at the top of the Serie A standings on the final day of the season, they will go into a play-off to decide who takes the Serie A title with no extra time and penalties if they are deadlocked after 90 minutes.

Teams fighting for European football places in the standings will still have to rely on the head-to-head record to settle things.

The change is reportedly the idea of FIGC President Gabriele Gravina which he believes will make the league more exciting.
