Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini says their 1-1 draw against Marseille in the Europa League was a ‘great’ result. La Dea opened the scoring through Gianluca Scamacca in the 11th minute, only for Chancel Mbemba to equalize for Marseille ten minutes later.
In his post-match analysis, Gasperini reflected on the performance, conceding that La Dea could have done more up top:
“The opening goal? It was undoubtedly a great play. Even the pass had perfect timing.” However, he expressed concerns about the team’s attacking performance, emphasizing the need to create more scoring opportunities, especially in Bergamo. Gasperini highlighted that aside from Scamacca’s goal, Atalanta struggled to generate dangerous chances until late in the game.
Gasperini also mentioned Sead Kolasinac, who had to be substituted due to injury: “A big loss. We’ll see how long he’ll be out. But today, whoever replaced him did a good job.”
Looking ahead to the return leg in a week’s time, Gasperini emphasized Marseille’s strength, even away from home: “Marseille performed well away as well. They’re a great team, physically strong. We’ll need to deliver a great performance. The 1-1? It remains a great result. But on Thursday, we’ll need to put our forwards in a position to score.”
