Former Lazio sporting director Igli Tare believes new Juventus midfielder Khephren Thuram will be the ‘surprise of the Serie A season’. Tare spent 14 years in his role with Biancocelesti, before leaving the position in 2023 amidst reports that he had clashed with coach Maurizio Sarri.
Speaking with Sky Sport Italia, the former Lazio man touched on the summer transfer window in Serie A, with a number of high profile names moving clubs.
When asked about his potential return to football management, Tare responded, “When will I return? That’s a good question. I don’t know, the desire is there, but I don’t want to rush anything.”
Tare also commented on Pavlovic, a defender who has caught Milan’s attention: “We had already reached an agreement, but unfortunately he didn’t pass the medical. I know him well, he can play in both a three-man and four-man defense. He has an offensive playing style, an educated foot, and scores many goals from set pieces. The Rossoneri would be making a great signing.”
Regarding Khephren Thuram, Tare expressed his surprise that no other big club had shown interest in him: “I think Thuram will be the surprise of the next Serie A season – he’s a complete midfielder. I’m surprised that no other big club has thought about him. I congratulate Juventus. He can become a key player in Thiago Motta’s team. Better than Rabiot? Adrien has had a great career, but Khephren has so many qualities.”
On the topic of Federico Chiesa, Tare stated: “He’s among the best players around, but it depends on the club’s plans. If he’s not part of the future, they could consider offers. Players with his pace are not easy to find, but if he’s not part of the club’s plans, then perhaps it’s time to part ways and cash in. Replacement? There are few players at Juventus’ level. Sancho or Adeyemi? I prefer the Englishman.”
Tare also shared his thoughts on Calafiori: “I don’t think Roma didn’t see a strong player in him, but he was coming off significant injuries and needed opportunities that the Giallorossi couldn’t give him. All clubs have benefited from his growth – Bologna, Basel, Roma, and Arsenal who will sign him. Calafiori is the classic example that when you give players confidence, they will eventually emerge. Everything is lacking in football except players; there’s no longer the money of the past. Today, ideas are needed.”
