Inzaghi: “Inter cannot concede two goals like that”

Start

Inter Milan coach Simone Inzaghi head coach expressed his disappointment following his team’s 2-2 draw against Genoa in their Serie A opener. The Nerazzurri conceded a 95th-minute penalty, squandering their lead and two points in the process.

Inzaghi began by addressing the late penalty incident: “There’s disappointment. The boys played a serious and focused game. In the first half, we created a lot, conceding a goal from an accident, then we were good to recover with the equalizer. Then there was Badelj’s miracle save on Dimarco. At the 84th minute, we found the goal to take the lead, and that’s where I’m not satisfied.”

The coach continued, “I had put Asllani on to manage the ball better, but conceding two goals like that makes it difficult to win. Credit to Genoa who never gave up, the boys played with heart, but the draw doesn’t satisfy us. A team like ours, when it takes the lead in the 84th minute, shouldn’t concede goals, especially in that way.”

Inzaghi acknowledged the difficulty of the match but was critical of the goals conceded: “The team was focused and was giving me very good feelings on a difficult field. Then it’s difficult to find victory by conceding two similar goals. There will be work to do, it’s August 17th, but I have nothing to say to the boys for their commitment. Apart from the goals, we hardly conceded anything to Genoa.”

When asked about the increasing difficulty of the league, Inzaghi agreed: “Absolutely yes. Winning is difficult, winning again is even more so. The boys are mature and they know it, that’s why I’m sorry because playing a game like this at Marassi after the difficulties we’ve had, with a team that has only worked together for the last eight days… In the best moment, we shouldn’t have lost that ball that led to the penalty. Football leaves you nothing. Today we should have done a little more.”

Regarding Bisseck’s performance, Inzaghi said: “He played an excellent game, then in the last 20 minutes he wasn’t lucid and that’s why I was about to change him with Pavard. Then, having taken the lead, I preferred to keep him because Genoa was putting in jumpers and I would have lost a few centimeters. He must continue to work this way; on the second goal, he made a mistake, but he’s the first to know it. He must continue to work like this because he’s a boy of absolute value.”

In the press conference, Inzaghi addressed the team’s transfer strategy: “We made certain choices. On the flanks with Dimarco, Augusto, Dumfries and Darmian, and then we’ll have Buchanan between November and December, we’re fine like this. We’re looking for a defensive element, the choice on the flanks is in common agreement with the club.”
