Juventus Choose Di Gregorio as Szczesny Successor

Juventus are reportedly eyeing Monza goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio for the summer and aim to beat the competition by starting work on a deal. The Italian goalkeeper has been performing exceptionally well, having managed 11 clean sheets this season, prompting Juventus to lay the groundwork for a move, despite having two valuable goalkeepers in Wojciech Szczesny and Mattia Perin, both over 30,

La Gazzetta dello Sport (Via IlBianconero) report that while Di Gregorio grew up in Inter’s youth academy idolizing Samir Handanovic, he would never turn down an opportunity from Juventus. Monza signed him in 2022 for €4 million and now value him at least five times more, around €20 million, the same amount as Guglielmo Vicario’s transfer to Tottenham. Inter will retain a percentage of any future resale, while in the summer, several Serie A teams may be in need of a new goalkeeper.

The newspaper outline how ‘no one at Juventus intends to sideline Szczesny’, who is having another crucial season in his career with his contract expiring in June 2025. The Polish goalkeeper may renew for another year, following the example of some teammates who have accepted lower wages. However, if this does not happen, a change of clubs is not ruled out, especially if an attractive offer arises, allowing the club to save €6.5 million net salary.

The idea for the Bianconeri is to replicate what was done years ago with the Buffon-Szczesny pairing, allowing Di Gregorio a year of apprenticeship behind the Polish goalkeeper. Alternatively, he could claim the starting spot with Perin as his backup. However, to secure Di Gregorio, Juventus needs to monetize the departure of either Szczesny or Perin.

Despite making an attempt to sign the Monza keeper, Juve are expected to face opposition from Napoli and Roma, who  are also tracking him, as well as Inter, although they are currently covered with Yann Sommer and have no intention of spending on a second goalkeeper.
