Juventus will not renew Szczesny contract, sale imminent

Start

Juventus are looking to cut-back their squad salaries and will reportedly aim to sell goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny. The Polish international was one of the Bianconeri’s best performers in the 2023-24 season, but the club are unlikely to renew his contract, given the impending arrival of Michele Di Gregorio.

Calciomercato report that Juve’s goal is to challenge Inter in the Serie A title race and make as much progress as possible in the Champions League after a year without European competition.

Sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli is plotting the first market moves, and is looking to agree deals for Teun Koopmeiners and Riccardo Calafiori, having already secured Di Gregorio from Monza.

For this reason, Juventus’ intention is to sacrifice Szczesny, not due to his on-field performance but for contractual and financial reasons. The Polish international has not given the green light for renewal and the subsequent spreading of wages, rejecting the proposal from the clubs management for a two-year extension.

At the moment, Szczesny earns a net salary of €6.5 million per season, over €12 million gross. Juventus want to reduce costs, spreading the salary of the former Roma and Arsenal goalkeeper. However, this proposal has not found agreement from the player, who aims to respect his existing contract with Juventus expiring in the summer of 2025.

Szczesny has also rejected lucrative offers from Saudi Arabia, and would thus be available on a free transfer in a year before potentially moving to the United States, a scenario that appeals to him greatly to end his career.

Only a call for a return to the Premier League could change the Polish goalkeeper’s mind, with Juventus and Giuntoli also considering a possible contract termination to save on Szczesny’s hefty wages and make room for the imminent arrival of Di Gregorio.
