Inter Milan’s latest signing, goalkeeper Josep Martinez, recently shared insights into his career and personal life in an exclusive interview with Inter TV. The Spanish shot-stopper revealed his childhood idols and the valuable lessons he’s learned throughout his journey in football.
Martinez began by discussing his early inspirations: “I grew up idolizing Cañizares and Casillas. When I was young, my favorite player was undoubtedly José Santiago Cañizares, the incredible Valencia goalkeeper. Later, Iker Casillas became my hero, someone I’ve always greatly admired.”
Reflecting on his formative years, Martinez highlighted the significance of his time in Barcelona’s youth academy: “During my two years in Barcelona’s youth system, I learned an immense amount, not just as a professional but also in terms of values. It was one of the most significant moments of my career.”
The 26-year-old also shared an alternative career path he might have pursued: “If I hadn’t become a footballer, I would have liked to be a physiotherapist for a football team.”
Martinez’s professional debut came with Las Palmas, where he faced a challenging period that shaped his mentality: “When I was 20, an injury sidelined me for a few months. It made me realize the importance of not getting distracted by noise from people outside the field. You need to stay focused on your own path.”
Discussing the evolution of the goalkeeper’s role, Martinez emphasized the importance of adapting to modern playing styles: “I’ve always been at clubs where the modern goalkeeper model was paramount, and this has helped me progress and grow continuously.”
The Spanish keeper also stressed the significance of team dynamics: “The locker room environment is crucial. It’s your teammates who help you grow and teach you values that will stay with you forever.”
Perhaps the most poignant insight Martinez offered was about the nature of success in football: “I’ve learned that in football, determination counts more than talent. Talent is important for getting the opportunity to start your career, but maintaining your position requires determination and dedication.”
