New England-Themed Genoa Away Kit Unveiled

Genoa and Kappa have unveiled their latest away kit ready for the 2025-26 season, and it has sparked quite the reaction across social media.

The design features a striking Cross of St George on a field of white, in a breathtaking nod to the club’s Anglo-Italian roots.

Genoa’s new kit was released to ‘celebrate the historic bond’ between the club and England, and with the cross emblazoned across the torso and again on the collar.

Aside from the cross stretching proudly from hem to collar, the jersey boasts gold accents on the Kappa logo and the club badge, which gives the kit a premium feel.

Why is There an England Flag in Genoa’s Badge?

Interestingly, Genoa’s connection to the Cross of St George pre-dates England’s adoption of it.

The city of Genoa in northwest Italy has a strong naval history, and during its existence as a powerful maritime republic during the Crusades, it adopted the cross as its flag around the 11th or 12th century.

England then adopted the Cross of St. George in the 13th century, flying the flag as a way to pay tribute to the Genoese navy, who would in turn grant their ships protection.

Genoa’s soccer team was later created in 1893 by English settlers, and the badge is believed to be a nod to both the city’s maritime republic, but also the founders themselves.

It is interesting to note that Italians were barred from playing in its formative years, as Genoa — who are decidedly mid-table in offshore sportsbooks‘ estimations for next season — was a British-only club.

“It’s coming home” is emblazoned on the new Genoa away kit as a genius double entendre; not only does it honor England’s obsessive concept of returning trophies to the homeland of the sport, but it is also a link to Genoa’s English founders.

The kit campaign spotlights James Spensley — the English doctor, goalkeeper, and founder who helped bring football to Italy and established Genoa CFC 132 years ago, making it Italy’s oldest soccer club.
