The repercussions from the Max Allegri ban that led to his acrimonious exit from Juventus just over a year ago are still being felt, and he will serve a two-match retrospective suspension when he takes over the reins at AC Milan.
Why Was Max Allegri Sacked By Juventus?
The latest chapter in Massimiliano ‘Max’ Allegri’s coloured career in the Serie A sees him return to AC Milan — the club where he lifted the first of his six Serie A titles.
Allegri’s return is a departure from the next AC Milan manager shortlist that was being touted in the media, with the pragmatic Italian landing at the San Siro, in the hopes of bringing stability back to a brittle Rossoneri.
His remarkable resumé in Italy is about as good as it gets on paper, but it is hard to ignore his impetuous and impulsive tendencies that ultimately led to his sacking at Juventus last summer.
Although the 57-year-old became the first man to lift five Coppa Italia titles after Juventus’ 1-0 victory against Atalanta in 2024, the Old Lady’s victory parade was overshadowed by Allegri’s violent outburst after the game.
After growing angry at a decision deep in stoppage time, he ripped off his jacket and was subsequently brandished with a red card for sarcastically applauding the referee.
The controversy continued into the tunnel, where was alleged to have angrily attacked the referees, threatened a journalist and waved off Juve’s sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli during the celebrations.
Although the 2023-24 campaign was de-railed by a heavy points deduction after being found guilty of false accounting, Allegri’s actions are said to have directly contributed to his snap firing. Even with two games remaining in the league, he was sacked immediately after the Coppa Italia final.
Max Allegri Ban Will Be Served as AC Milan Manager
As a result of his sweary tirade, Allegri was handed a two-match touchline ban by the Italian Football Federation, as well as a $5,400 fine by league prosecutors.
Before he could serve that touchline ban, Juventus cut ties after the final, so he will be forced to serve it retrospectively in his new role in Milan.
Slipping all the way down to ninth in Serie A this season means AC Milan enter the Coppa Italia in the preliminary rounds, which are due to begin in August. That means Allegri will be banned for his managerial debut in the same competition that led to his catty departure from Juventus, little over a year ago.

Max Allegri’s AC Milan contract is believed to be worth €5 million per-year, and ties him down for an initial two-season stint with an option for at third.
Reports suggest he had been on the verge of joining Napoli, right up until Antonio Conte’s decision to stay after a crisis meeting following the club’s recent Scudetto triumph.
According to early estimations on the best mobile sportsbooks for US players, Milan are fourth favourites for the Serie A next season.
