Como Pushing to Secure 100% Rights For Nico Paz After Real Madrid Passed Up On Buyback Option

Start

Nico Paz certainly captured the attention in his maiden year at Como last season, and although he is contracted for another three years, former club Real Madrid had the possibility to exercise a buyback option this summer. After passing up on that opportunity, Como are now eager to re-structure his deal in their favor.

Is Nico Paz Going Back to Real Madrid?

Nico Paz’s graduation from Real Madrid Castilla two seasons ago was met with palpable excitement in the Spanish capital.

A fully-fledged Madrid youth product, ready to slot into the first team, had the backing of fans and the club after several eye-catching performances.

However, several arrivals — most notably Jude Bellingham, Arda Guler and most recently Franco Mastantuono this summer — have inadvertently imposed a roadblock on his path to the senior team.

That forced Madrid and Paz to look elsewhere to accelerate his development, and newly-promoted Como spotted a rare opportunity to pick-up a future prospect last season.

The initial four-year, $7 million deal was a win for both parties; Como captured one of La Liga’s most promising talents for a relatively modest transfer fee, while Real Madrid shoehorned strong insurances for his future.

Los Blancos seriously considered paying the $9 million buyback clause on his contract this summer, having proved his worth in Italy with six goals and eight assists from midfield.

However, despite passing up on that opportunity to bring him back to Spain, Madrid retain 50 percent of his ownership.

With Real Madrid’s interest waning, offshore sportsbooks favor Paz to remain put at Como next season.

Como President Confirms Plans to Secure 100% Ownership of Nico Paz

Nico Paz’s new-found importance at Como has forced the club to reconsider the conditions of his current deal.

Como’s $100 million spending spree this summer is a huge signal of their intent to improve on last season’s 10th-placed finish, and included in their plans is a more favorable deal for Paz.

The Argentine’s rights are currently shared 50-50 between Como and Madrid — something the former are unhappy with, particularly after Madrid passed up on their buyback clause.

Como will push to secure 100 percent ownership of the 20-year-old, and also hope to remove all the buyback clauses Madrid hold; €9 million for 2025, €10 million for 2026, and €11 million for 2027.

Como’s owner, Mirwan Suwarso, publicly confirmed these plans: “We are in talks to retain him. The meetings we’ve had so far have been positive, but it will take time.”
