Aston Villa vs Roma Preview

Gian Piero Gasperini will be taking his side to England for a Premier League double-header to finish off Roma’s pre-season tour and the Giallorossi will kick off their visit to the United Kingdom against Aston Villa.

So far, Roma have enjoyed a strong run in the build-up to the 2025/26 Serie A season, winning each of their three matches so far and keeping a clean sheet on each occasion.

The Italian side began their pre-season tour with a 1-0 victory over Kaiserlautern thanks to a goal from new signing, Evan Ferguson, before facing two French sides.

Gasperini’s men picked up a 3-0 victory at home against Cannes, with Stephan El Shaarway, Artem Dovbyk and Ferguson finding the target, before heading to France to beat Lens 2-0.

In contrast, Aston Villa have struggled to build any momentum in pre-season, winning just one of their five matches so far – losing their opening two encounters against Walsall and Rostock.

Unai Emery’s side then travelled to Germany and were held by Frankfurt in a 2-2 stalemate, before heading to the United States to face St Louis and Nashville.

Villa remained undefeated in the States, beating St Louis 2-1 and drawing 2-2 with a resolute Nashville side, as Ollie Watkins scored his second goal of pre-season.

The Premier League side will now face Roma, Marseille and Villarreal before their opening day clash against Newcastle on August 16th at Villa Park.

Roma and Aston Villa have never faced off before meaning their upcoming encounter will make history and the Italian side are being favored on offshore sportsbooks.

Aston Villa Team News

Unai Emery has increased the strength of his starting eleven for each pre-season match, after losing the opening two matches with a makeshift starting roster.

Obviously the primary goal for any team in pre-season is to increase match fitness and get a look at new signings, however, Emery is expected to field his strongest team yet.

Ollie Watkins, Amadou Onana, Pau Torres and Boubacar Kamara all started in Villa’s most recent friendly against Nashville and are likely to feature again.

Donyell Malen came off the bench to score against the MLS side and the Dutchman may be rewarded with a starting spot against Gian Piero Gasperini’s side.

Aston Villa Predicted Line-Up: Martinez; Cash, Konsa, Mings, Maatsen; Tielemans, Kamara; Malen, McGinn, Rogers; Watkins

Roma Team News

The Giallorossi have added a host of star names to their roster this summer, although Gasperini still believes his side are stretched thin in certain areas.

Wesley Franca, Neil El Aynaoui and Evan Ferguson have all impressed during this pre-season tour, with the latter scoring two goals during the three fixtures so far.

Gasperini has started a strong starting eleven in each of the matches so far and is expected to so again against Aston Villa, with the front line of Matias Soule, Ferguson and Tommaso Baldanzi clicking well so far.

Roma Predicted Line-Up: Svilar; Celik, Mancini, Ndicka; Wesley, El Aynaoui, Kone, Angelino; Soule, Baldanzi, Ferguson

Prediction

These two teams have experienced different pre-season’s so far, with the Italian side impressing and beating each of their opponents so far, while Villa have struggled to find form.

However, the Giallorossi have not faced the level of quality that Villa possesses so far, however, the match will not be played at Villa Park which removes a home advantage.

The match is set to take place at Bescot Stadium, home of Walsall and we expect a close-knit affair with both sides looking to trial some new strategies as the season’s opener looms.

Prediction: Aston Villa 2-2 Roma
