Giovanni Reyna is reportedly set to follow in Christian Pulisic’s footsteps this summer, as the US international nears a move to Serie A.
What Has Happened To Gio Reyna?
The USMNT star was tipped to become one of the next big things from the States, joining Borussia Dortmund’s youth set up from the New York City FC Academy in July 2019.
After impressing in the U19 squad, Reyna earned a place in the Borussia Dortmund senior side and made his professional debut against FC Ausburg in January 2020 at just 17-years-old.
Between 2020-2024, Reyna made 121 appearances for the Yellow and Blacks, contributing to 34 goals across all competitions (17G +17A) before falling out-of-favor in Germany.
His relationship with the squad faltered for multiple reasons, dealing with multiple injuries, failing to adapt during a period of managerial changes and becoming frustrated with a lack of playing time.
Eventually, the 22-year-old would move on from the German side, albeit on a temporary basis, signing for Nottingham Forest on loan during the 2023/24 season.
Reyna made 10 appearances for the Premier League side, failing to score a single goal and underwhelmed during his time in England – with Forest opting out of a permanent deal.
The NYCFC Academy graduate returned to Dortmund for the 2024/25 season and accumulated just 627 minutes across all competitions, meaning the German side are reportedly willing to let Reyna move on this summer.
Dortmund are one of the favorites to win the Bundesliga on the best betting apps and do not see Reyna as a player that can make that title ambition come true.
His deal in Germany comes to an end in June 2026, meaning Dortmund will be hoping to cash-in on the American this summer as opposed to him leaving on a free next summer.
Alongside his club troubles, Reyna also ruffled some feathers in the USMNT camp after refusing to compete in the CONCACAF Gold Cup, with the likes of Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie also making the same decision.
Will Giovanni Reyna Move To Serie A?
Borussia Dortmund have made their intentions very clear – they want to sell Reyna this summer. Luckily for both parties, there appear to be a host of options this summer.
One intrigued option appears to be coming from Italy, as Parma have reportedly made an $8 million bid for the USMNT player and are looking to replicate the success Pulisic has found in Italy.
The AC Milan star enjoyed his best season in Europe last year with the Rossoneri, contributing to 29 goals in 50 games and Pulisic also pipped Lamine Yamal to the ESPY Award for best soccer player.
Reyna has already made similar moves to Pulisic during his career, moving to Dortmund as a teenager and struggling to find form in the Premier League.
Other Italian side have been linked with the Borussia Dortmund star this summer, with the likes of Fiorentina, Lazio and Roma all monitoring Reyna.
Only Parma have made an official bid for the 22-year-old so far and a change of scenery could be what’s needed for Reyna to reignite the form he showed during his early Dortmund days.
