Mateo Retegui’s father revealed that a move to Atletico Madrid fell through, blaming the Financial Fair Play and João Félix. Just like his compatriot Lautaro Martinez, Atleti seemed to be in Retegui’s destiny, with an agreement almost finalized before turning towards Italy and Serie A.
In an interview with Mundo Deportivo, Carlos Retegui stated:
“Last year, everything was arranged with Atletico Madrid. Mateo would have played there. The transfer fell through due to Financial Fair Play and João Félix.”
“He had to choose between playing in Germany, England, or Genoa. They told me I was crazy not to choose the Premier League, but that opportunity will come.”
