The president of the Italian Footballers Federation says the fight against racism must be conducted without ‘ifs’ and ‘buts’. Umberto Calcagno spoke with Radio Anch’Io Sport on Radio1 and shared his thoughts on the racism row involving Juan Jesus and Francesco Acerbi, with the Inter man having allegedly racially abused the Napoli defender:

“The fight against racism must be conducted without ‘ifs’ and ‘buts’ – he explained – “these are episodes to condemn. He is one of the most serene guys and one who dedicates himself most to our world, I don’t want to trivialize but neither do I want to instrumentalize. We certainly have responsibilities, but footballers are the ones who suffer insults the most.”

“Juan Jesus’ words are indicative, he apologized immediately and they were also accepted. We all have to understand that the things that happen on the field have no justifications, but there has nevertheless been recognition of the mistake. Acerbi has always been a reference point for our footballing world.”
