Atalanta are on the verge of completing the signing of Nicolò Zaniolo, with the Italian midfielder set to undergo his medical examination on Thursday. The former Roma player had already chosen the Bergamo-based club in recent days, despite persistent interest from Fiorentina.
Sky Sport Italia report how Zaniolo, 24, is returning to Italy after leaving Roma in January 2023 for Galatasaray. He spent the last season on loan at Aston Villa in the Premier League.
The deal structure involves an initial loan fee of €3.5 million, with an obligation to buy set at €16 million plus €2.5 million in bonuses. The purchase clause is contingent on Zaniolo making 60% of appearances for Atalanta. The total value of the operation could reach €22-23 million.
During his time at Aston Villa, Zaniolo made 25 Premier League appearances, scoring two goals. He also featured in one League Cup match and three FA Cup games. In the Conference League, he scored once in 10 appearances.
This move marks a significant return to Serie A for Zaniolo, who will be looking to reignite his career in familiar territory with Atalanta, known for their attacking style of play under manager Gian Piero Gasperini.
