Di Canio, however, focused his criticism on a specific transfer decision. “Milan should never have signed Emerson Royal,” he asserted. “He’s not a Milan-caliber player and doesn’t represent an upgrade over Calabria. At Tottenham, fans even chanted against him; he can hardly do anything. I couldn’t understand how he managed to play under all those managers.” Di Canio speculated on the reasoning behind the transfer, suggesting, “If they signed him, it’s because Calabria provided even fewer guarantees. Perhaps if he goes to Fiorentina, he might make a good impression.”
