Following Juventus’ defeat to AC Milan in the Supercoppa Italiana semifinal, head coach Thiago Motta expressed his disappointment and analysed the team’s performance. The match, held in Riyadh, saw Juventus take an early lead but ultimately succumb to a 2-1 loss, marking a significant moment in the tournament.

Motta acknowledged that the team could not be satisfied with their overall performance, particularly given their strong showing in the first half. “We had opportunities to extend our lead, but Milan capitalized on their chances,” he noted. The coach pointed out that despite Juventus leading for much of the match, Milan’s solitary opportunity with Theo Hernandez should not have resulted in a victory for them.

When discussing his substitutions during the game, Motta emphasized that every decision made was for the benefit of the team and its results. “All changes are made for the good of the team and the outcome; it’s up to you to judge them,” he stated, highlighting the pressure coaches face in making tactical decisions.

The loss was particularly painful for Juventus as they aimed to reach the final and had a prime opportunity to defeat their rivals. “This is an important defeat; we wanted to advance to the final and had a great chance against Milan,” Motta lamented.

Motta also reflected on the team’s mentality, expressing a need for improvement in character and resilience. He noted that while they performed well initially, they failed to maintain control after facing adversity. “It was crucial to react positively after the first setback; we couldn’t do that, which hindered our ability to manage the game after 70 minutes,” he explained.

The coach drew parallels between this match and previous encounters, indicating a recurring issue with closing out games. “In matches like today against Fiorentina, we struggled to finish strong. While we played better and were superior in many aspects, our reaction wasn’t good enough,” he added.
