Gianluigi Buffon Expresses Disappointment with Francesco Acerbi After Defender Rejects Italy Call-Up

Start

Veteran Inter Milan center-back Francesco Acerbi has refused to join the Italy squad for their upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Norway and Moldova.

The decision, which Acerbi described as deeply considered but necessary, has sparked reaction across the Italian football world — most notably from Gianluigi Buffon, who publicly criticized the move as a rejection of the national cause, not just head coach Luciano Spalletti.

Why did Francesco Acerbi decline Italy’s call-up?

Acerbi released a personal statement on social media just days after Inter’s heavy 5–0 defeat to PSG in the Champions League final.

In it, the 37-year-old emphasized that while playing for Italy had always been a “source of pride,” the current environment under Spalletti’s leadership lacked the respect he felt was essential.

“I’ve always given everything, but I won’t stay where I’m no longer really wanted,” Acerbi wrote. “It’s clear that I’m not a part of the CT’s project. I demand respect.”

He made it clear that the decision was not driven by the sting of losing a final, nor by fatigue, but rather a need to step away from a national setup where he no longer felt included.

Acerbi had been excluded from previous Italy squads under Spalletti, and while he was recently recalled, the veteran seems unconvinced that his role in the team is valued.

Buffon on Acerbi

Gianluigi Buffon, the legendary former goalkeeper and now Italy’s delegation chief, did not hide his disappointment. Speaking to Rai Sport, Buffon argued that representing the Azzurri should go beyond personal grievances.

“A player doesn’t say no to Spalletti. He’s saying no to something bigger — which is Italy,” Buffon said. “We are only fleeting figures. But the honor of wearing the Azzurri shirt is eternal.”

Buffon, who earned a record 178 caps for the Italian national team, stressed that every call-up carries symbolic weight, representing not just selection, but national unity, history, and responsibility.

Will Acerbi Play for Italy While Spalletti is Manager?

Luciano Spalletti had hoped to bring Acerbi’s experience into a squad preparing for two crucial qualifiers.

While Acerbi made it clear that his decision isn’t necessarily permanent, it’s uncertain whether the door remains open for future involvement under Spalletti.

Nevertheless, the Azzurri now begin preparation for Norway away and Moldova at home.
