Former Napoli and Uruguay star, Walter Gargano, has claimed that Darwin Nunez has told him that a move to Naples is going to happen.
Is Darwin Nunez Joining Napoli?
The Liverpool star has been in the headlines for multiple weeks now, as Nunez looks to be heading away from Anfield following a disappointing spell in the Premier League.
Since joining the Reds in June 2022 for a club record fee of around $85 million (which includes add-ons), Nunez has struggled to prove his worth in Merseyside.
In 143 appearances for Liverpool, the 26-year-old has contributed to 66 goals in 143 appearances (40G + 26A) which is not a poor return – however the Uruguayan has missed several big chances.
Liverpool won the Premier League title last season and Arne Slot preferred Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota, Mohamed Salah and Cody Gakpo, meaning Nunez is now being linked with a move away.
Napoli are currently leading the way to land the striker this summer, with negotiations entering the final stages and a former Napoli and Uruguayan star has given a huge update on the deal.
Walter Gargano, who made 235 appearances for Napoli and obtained 63 caps for his national side, revealed that he has spoken to Nunez and the Liverpool star admitted that he will be heading to Naples.
Gargano said: “The heat of the Neapolitans would do him a lot of good. I spoke to him about a week ago and I hope he gets to Naples. I told him, Go to Naples!’ He told me, Yes, I’m coming to Naples, I’m waiting to close with Napoli.
“The Napoli squad, with De Bruyne and possibly Nunez, will make a leap in quality. Today Napoli’s goal must be to go deep in the Champions League as much as possible. But I will always be a fan of Napoli, even if in the end Darwin doesn’t arrive.”
Napoli have already been pretty busy this summer, signing Kevin De Bruyne and recently agreeing terms with Noa Lang over a move in the coming days.
Will Liverpool Have A Buy Back Clause For Nunez?
The Serie A champions are said to have submitted a bid in the $55-60 million region and are reportedly confident over agreeing personal terms before the start of pre season.
At this current moment in time, there have been no reports over a buy-back clause in the deal and Liverpool are happy to cut their losses to fund more deals this summer.
Arne Slot has already added Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez to his roster this month, cementing their place as favorites to win the Premier League on the best betting apps.
Napoli will need to fund the move for Darwin Nunez and this looks like it will occur through the sale of Nigerian international, Victor Osimhen, who continues to be linked with a move away.
The former Lille striker has rejected multiple offers from Saudi Arabian side, Al Hilal, while other clubs around Europe are unwilling to meet the 26-year-old’s wage demands.
