New Arsenal signing Cristhian Mosquera rejected a move to Como, who continue their search for center-backs following multiple setbacks.
The 21-year-old, who has made over 70 La Liga appearances in the past two seasons, will undergo his medical in London this week, completing a €20 million move.
The Gunners beat strong competition to secure Mosquera, who was reportedly adamant on joining Arsenal from the beginning of the window.
Which Serie A Club Did Mosquera Turn Down?
Briefing the transfer to Arsenal, Fabrizio Romano reported that Mosquera turned down an ‘important proposal’ from a Serie A club.
Fans had speculated that this could well have been Inter, who were rumored to be interested earlier this summer, or city rivals Milan, who were monitoring the Spaniard back in January.
However, reputable Arsenal insider @HandofArsenal – the first to break the initial story – has confirmed that the mystery club was indeed Como.
Como, managed by former Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas, finished 10th last season and have actively been looking to reinforce their options in central defense.
Is Thiaw Joining Como?
Mosquera wasn’t the only setback for Fabregas. Malick Thiaw also turned down a move to Como despite AC Milan accepting a €25 million bid for the German defender.
With both primary targets rejecting moves, it’s proving difficult for the club to acquire the caliber of player required to make a serious push for the European spots next season.
Como Transfer News
Meanwhile, Como are still working to sign defender Carl Starfelt from Celta Vigo. Fabregas is a keen admirer of the Swedish international, but negotiations are still ongoing.
Celta are holding out for a €10 million fee plus add-ons, while Como are hoping to strike a deal for less.
Should a deal for Starfelt fall through, Como are also eyeing alternative defensive options, including Charlie Creswell from Toulouse and Jacobo Ramon of Real Madrid.
Ramon, just 20, has already appeared six times for Madrid’s first team and was recently part of their FIFA Club World Cup squad in the USA.
Talks have been ongoing between Como and Real Madrid, and with the tournament now over, negotiations are expected to pick up pace.
Real Madrid are likely to include a future buy-back clause in any deal for Ramon, as they did with Nico Paz, who joined Como last year and has since flourished under Fabregas.
