Giorgio Scalvini has attracted plenty of interest from outside of Italy this summer, but his former boss Gian Piero Gasperini is keen to ensure his next move is to the capital.

Giorgio Scalvini Transfer News

Giorgio Scalvini spent nearly the entirety of last season on the sidelines, but that hasn’t deterred interested parties.

At 21, the hope is that the ACL and shoulder injuries that ruled him out of much of the campaign, are but a blip in his early-career development.

Newcastle United are said to be carrying out their due diligence on Scalvini, but reports suggest the 13 different injuries since breaking into the first team at Atalanta remain a concern.

It was reported in June that Newcastle had a bid rejected for Scalvini in the region of $45 million, and Atalanta’s stance remains that are a far more important bid is needed for them to consider letting go of a homegrown talent.

The Magpies have shown no indication that they will return with an improved bid, as of yet.

Roma Manager Gian Piero Gasperini Interested in Reunion With Scalvini

Roma have made no secret of their need for defensive reinforcements, which has only been exacerbated by Mats Hummel’s retirement.

Gian Piero Gasperini’s preferred centre-back pairing will likely be the same as his predecessor’s, with Evan Ndicka and Gianluca Mancini cementing their spots last term.

Depth will be key to Roma challenging for a coveted Champions League qualification spot next season — a feat they have failed to achieve since 2018.

I Giallorossi have already sought to add attacking firepower with the capture of Neil El Ayanaoui, and Evan Ferguson on loan.

However, FootItalia understands that Gasperini has told the Roma board that his defensive roster is thin on the ground, and allocating funds for a player he is familiar with is preferential.

Scalvini was elevated from Atalanta’s youth teams, and nurtured into Italy’s brightest defensive talent by Gasperini, who is now eager to bring him to the capital.

Roma have generated over $50 million in players sales and have cut their wage bill significantly, which is, of course, in line with the Friedkin Group’s mission to balance Roma’s books.

That mission has largely been successful, and reports suggest they are ready to reinvest money into the team this summer, in order to push the team forward into top four contention.

According to offshore sportsbooks, Roma are hot on the heels of AC Milan for the final European spot next season.

Scalvini’s capture would be a real coup for Roma, with the 21-year-old highly coveted in Italy, and beyond.

Atalanta’s stance remains unchanged; they will command a significant fee for a player who represents the club’s sustainable approach to transfers.

With three years still remaining on his current contract, it is likely Roma, and any other potential bidders, will be forced to pay upwards of $60m.
