Newcastle And Tottenham Join The Race For In-Demand Parma Defender

Start

Newcastle and Tottenham have ramped up their interest in Parma defender Giovanni Leoni, according to the latest Serie A transfer news.

Leoni is one of the most sought after teenagers in Italy’s elite soccer division this summer. The 6ft 5in centre-back is tipped to become a global star in the coming years.

Still only 18, Leoni has an army of admirers who are all keeping tabs on him. So far, the Gialloblu have managed to keep him in Emilia-Romagna but it looks like it’s just a matter of time before Leoni moves on.

Serie A Transfer News

Inter, who are +300 with offshore sportsbooks to win Serie A this season, are still the frontrunners to sign Giovanni Leoni from Parma this summer.

In fact, Leoni has reportedly given the Nerazzurri the thumbs up about transferring to the San Siro. However, interest is still prominent from the English Premier League.

Liverpool have tracked the 18-year-old wonderkid over the last few months. Leoni is viewed as a long-term successor to captain Virgil Van Dijk.

Champions League clubs Newcastle and Tottenham have also stepped up their pursuit of Leoni. Both sides are very much in the mix for the Italian’s signature.

Milan and Juventus have also made inquiries. Despite not lodging official bids, the Serie A sides are in open communications with Parma.

Why Do Newcastle Want Giovanni Leoni?

So far this window, Newcastle have struggled in their pursuit of signing their favored targets. Anthony Elanga is the biggest name through the door at St James’ Park.

Head coach Eddie Howe is keen to add reinforcements and is a long-term admirer of Giovanni Leoni. The Azzurri youth international would make a welcome addition on Tyneside.

Local lad Dan Burn has been excellent over the last two years but isn’t getting any younger. Sven Botman has been solid for the Magpies but has entertained a number of injuries in recent seasons.

Fabian Schar is also coming to the end of his career so bringing in young blood will be key to the Geordies. With Alexander Isak expected to leave, meeting Leoni’s €40million price tag won’t be an issue.

Would Giovanni Leoni Consider A Transfer To Tottenham?

Tottenham has been steadily rebuilding under new head coach Thomas Frank. The Dane has welcomed the likes of Mohammed Kudus, Kevin Danso and Mathys Tel (on permanent deals) to north London.

Nonetheless, Frank is keen to address Spurs‘ leaky and injury-hit defence. The Lilywhites had the fifth worse backline in the English Premier League last season.

A potential switch to London would appear attractive to Giovanni Leoni. And there is also the lure of playing Champions League soccer.

However, Leoni would have plenty of competition for a starting berth once all centre-backs are fit. That in itself may deter a transfer to the Europa League winners.
