Monaco vs Inter Preview
Cristian Chivu will head to France for his first pre-season encounter as Inter boss, as the Nerazzurri begin their preparations for the 2025/26 campaign with a trip to Monaco.
The Italian side parted ways with long-term manager, Simone Inzaghi, after finishing second in Serie A and suffering a disastrous 5-0 defeat against PSG in the Champions League final.
Inzaghi is now the head coach of Al Hilal in Saudi Arabia, while Inter appointed Chivu after his impressive managerial debut with Parma last season.
The Romanian’s first duties as Inter boss came during the FIFA Club World Cup and the Serie A side failed to deliver, exiting the competition after a 2-0 defeat to Fluminense.
Since then, Inter have added some star quality to their ranks, while also letting go of some older names like Mark Arnautovic and Joaquin Correa.
Moving over to Monaco and it has been a strong pre-season campaign for the Ligue 1 giants, remaining undefeated from their opening seven fixtures ahead of the upcoming league campaign.
Adi Hutter’s side did not concede in their first four friendly fixtures after facing off against Cercle Brugge (1-0), Coventry (5-0), Nottingham Forest (0-0) and Bielefled (3-0).
The French side then beat Torino in two separate fixtures, winning 3-1 on each occasion, before being held to a 2-2 stalemate by Ajax in the Netherlands.
Monaco and Inter’s most recent encounter came in the 2024/25 Champions League group stages, as the Nerazzurri won 3-0 at the San Siro thanks to a Lautaro Martinez hat-trick.
The Ligue 1 giants have not managed to find a victory against Inter since April 1997, which is why the Italian side are heavy favorites on offshore sportsbooks.
Monaco Team News
Monaco have brought in some star names this summer, signing Eric Dier, Paul Pogba and Ansu Fati, however only Dier has managed to get some minutes in pre-season.
Pogba and Fati are unlikely to feature for a substantial amount of time in pre-season, as the Frenchman has not played since September 2023 and the Barcelona loanee made just six league appearances in 2024/25.
Hutter has fielded a strong line-up in pre-season so far and the Monaco boss is expected to do so again, with Inter possessing the biggest threat from each of their friendlies.
Monaco Predicted Line-Up: Majecki; Teze, Dier, Mawissa, Henrique; Minamino, Zakaria, Camara, Golovin, Biereth, Balogun
Inter Team News
Inter will not be able to call upon a trio of stars for his opening pre-season encounter, as Benjamin Pavard, Piotr Zielinski and Yann Aurel Bisseck continue their recoveries from injury.
The Nerazzurri have added some star names to their roster, bringing in Luis Henrique, Petar Sucic, Ange-Yoan Bonny and Nicola Zalewski, who should all earn some valuable minutes ahead of next season.
Cristian Chivu will be hoping to get a look at his 3-4-2-1 set-up before the season opener on August 25th, as the club continue to move away from Simone Inzaghi’s tenure in Milan.
Inter Predicted Line-Up: Sommer; Darmian, De Vrij, Bastoni; Dumfries, Barella, Asllani, Mkhitaryan, Dumfries; Thuram, Martinez
Prediction
Inter will be coming into this fixture with far less preparation than their French counterparts, as Monaco have already competed in seven pre-season friendlies.
Hutter’s men are yet to be beaten during their pre-season tour, but the Ligue 1 giants have not faced a team with the quality that Inter has across the board.
With that in mind, we expected the Italian side to just edge out a narrow victory as Cristian Chivu takes a look at his side ahead of their league opener against Torino on August 25th.
Prediction: Monaco 1 – 2 Inter
