Serie A Giants Prepare Career Lifeline For RB Leipzig Star Amid January Exit Rumors

Timo Werner is reportedly looking for a way out of Leipzig in the January transfer window and the German has attracted interest from Roma.

Is Timo Werner Leaving RB Leipzig?

The career of Timo Werner is something that continues to confuse soccer fans, as the German was tipped to become one of Europe’s most dangerous strikers during his opening stages in Germany.

However, the 29-year-old has endured a difficult few years and the 2025/26 season has not gone according to plan so far, with the German making just one appearance for RB Leipzig this season.

Ole Werner has opted to leave the former Chelsea player out of his side for the majority of this season and Leipzig have gone on to win four consecutive Bundesliga matches without conceding a goal.

This run of form has seen Leipzig move up to third in the table with 12 points from five matches and just two points off table-toppers, Bayern Munich.

Performing at such a high level means Werner is unlikely to feature much this season and the German is now considering his future, as the 2026 World Cup looms.

Werner first touched-base in Leipzig in July 2016 after signing from Stuttgart, where he caught the attention of multiple teams in Europe – earning a move to Chelsea in July 2020.

His time in England did not live up to expectations, as despite winning the Champions League in 2021, Werner failed to win over fans and scored 23 goals in 89 appearances.

Chelsea would eventually decide to cut their losses and in August 2022, Werner returned to Leipzig and failed to replicate the form he showed in his initial spell with the club.

This led to Werner returning to England once again, as the 29-year-old joined Tottenham Hotspur on loan in January 2024, where he struggled to make any impact – scoring three goals in 41 appearances.

Now, the German player has dropped down the pecking order at Leipzig and has been linked with a move in the January transfer window – with several teams showing interest.

Will Roma Sign Timo Werner?

Gian Piero Gasperini has made a strong start to his spell as Roma manager, winning four of the opening five Serie A matches and sitting third in the table.

However, the Giallorossi were recently defeated by Lille in the Europa League, as Roma’s struggles in front of goal continued in a 1-0 loss at home.

During the match, Roma were awarded a penalty after a VAR review and Artem Dovbyk went on to have his spot-kick saved, before the referee ordered a re-take after encroachment from the goalkeeper.

The Roma striker stepped up and saw his effort saved again, before the official astonishingly ordered another re-take and Dovbyk handed the responsibility to Matias Soule.

Amazingly, the Lille goalkeeper kept out the Argentine’s strike, meaning Roma failed to score from 12-yards on three separate occasions with two different takers.

This event highlighted the Giallorossi’s issue with finding the back of the net, as Roma have scored just five goals in Serie A so far and Dovbyk has now been linked with a move away.

Gasperini is reportedly keen on adding some more firepower to his attacking lineup in January, in hopes of ending Roma’s struggles in front of goal.

Despite a poor record in recent years, Werner has been a reliable source in front of goal and would be available in January, either on a temporary or permanent deal.

The German’s contract with Leipzig comes to an end in June 2026, meaning if a loan spell is successful, Roma could sign the German for free in the summer.
