Inter Milan have a decision to make over the future of Henrikh Mkhitaryan, as the Armenian’s contract with the Nerazzurri expires in June 2026.

Will Henrikh Mkhitaryan Sign New Inter Milan Contract?

The Nerazzurri have started to turn their attention to the contracts of several players within their roster, with the likes of Henrikh Mkhitaryan nearing the end of their deals.

Mkhitaryan has continued to feature for the Italian side this season despite entering the latter stages of his career, as the 36-year-old has started four out of six Serie A matches so far.

The Armenian signed for Inter Milan in July 2022 and has gone on to make 154 appearances for the Nerazzurri, winning two Supercoppa Italianas, Coppa Italia and Serie A title.

However, Inter are reportedly reluctant to off a new deal to players over the age of 30, which could impact the future of Mkhitaryan, Francesco Acerbi, Matteo Darmian and Stefan De Vrij – as these four players will all be out of contract next year.

The Nerazzurri’s focus is on the younger stars in Milan, as Cristian Chivu is keen to offer a new contract to Pio Esposito and would need to free up space for potential additions next season.

Although the idea of promoting the youth while pushing out the veteran players seems reasonable on paper, Inter will be aware that losing core members of the team could have short-term impact.

Chivu’s men have started to show signs of potential champions after a difficult start to the season and currently sit fourth in Serie A with 12 points from six matches.

Mkhitaryan is expected to play a big part in Inter’s plans for the 2025/26 season and the Armenian could push for another year in Milan – provided his performances are up to standard.

However, if the 36-year-old does not earn another deal with the Nerazzurri, then his future in soccer will be left unsure and ther have been murmurs over a possible retirement.

Could Henrikh Mkhitaryan Retire?

The former Manchester United star will turn 37 in January next year and will be well-aware that his best years are behind him, making retirement a genuine option.

Mkhitaryan has revealed that retiring from soccer is something that will require months of consideration and claimed that he will make a decision at the end of the season.

The Armenian is currently preparing for Inter’s clash against Roma, as Mkhitaryan goes up against his former side – winning the UEFA Conference League in 2021/22.

Making another move to a top European side will be hard for Mkhitaryan as clubs will not be willing to risk a move for a player that turns 38 next season and he wants Inter to be his last club.

Returning to play in his home nation of Armenia could be an option for the 36-year-old, however, Mkhitaryan may want to go out at the highest level.

Inter will also have to consider the future of both Davide Frattesi and Carlos Augusto, with both players out of contract in June 2028 and seeking pay rises.
