Will Genoa Sack Patrick Vieira?
The French soccer icon has endured a difficult spell in Serie A during the 2025/26 season so far, as Genoa sit bottom of the table and are without a win after nine matches.
Genoa have picked-up three points in the league and were defeated by newly-promoted Cremonese most recently as Federico Bonazzoli scored a brace to secure a 2-0 victory away from home.
This defeat has seen the pressure on Vieira’s shoulders rise tremendously and supporters vented their frustrations on October 29th, throwing flares onto the pitch and directing ‘go to work’ chants towards the Grifone roster.
Vieira took the reins at Genoa in November 2024 after an unsuccessful spell with Ligue 1 side, Strasbourg and has gone on to manage 37 matches in Italy.
The 49-year-old has picked up 10 wins, 12 draws and 15 defeats during his time in Italy, meaning his grip on the managerial role in Genoa is slowly loosening.
Many supporters will be watching MD10 in Serie A closely, as Patrick Vieira’s side face another newly-promoted side in Sassuolo and anything than three-points could be the final nail in the coffin for the Grifone boss.
Vieira is not the only manager in Serie A that is at risk of facing the sack before 2026, as Stefano Pioli’s rein as Fiorentina boss is under huge scrutiny.
La Viola sit one place above Genoa in the Serie A table and are also searching for their first league win of the season – but Pioli could be given more time after winning both Europa League Conference matches so far.
Vieira’s contract with Genoa does not expire until June 2027, meaning the Serie A side would need to pay the 49-year-old a lump sum in order to relieve him of his duties before then.
Who Could Patrick Vieira Manage Next?
The career in management has not been a huge success for Vieira so far, as the Frenchman has taken charge of New York City FC, Nice, Crystal Palace, Strasbourg and Genoa.
Vieira left NYCFC by mutual consent after a relatively successful period in the United States, as the 49-year-old over saw 90 matches and guided the club to ther first two playoff appearances in history.
His exit from the MLS came after an opportunity to manage in Europe came to light and Vieira took the reins at Nice in July 2018 but was ultimately sacked after a run of poor results in December 2020.
Crystal Palace appointed Vieira for his next role in July 2021, where he made a strong start before being made surplus to requirements in March 2023 after a long run without a win.
Vieira then returned to France to manage Strasbourg in July 2023, managing to keep the French side in Ligue 1 and parting ways by mutual consent in July 2024.
His journey across the globe in terms of management means that if he were to be axed by Genoa, Vieira could end up in any of Europe’s major leagues.
Arne Slot has come under huge pressure after a terrible start to the 2025/26 season, meaning the Dutchman could leave his post in Merseyside – but Cesc Fabregas has been linked with the Liverpool job.
One possibility that is slightly unique is becoming the France national team manager, as Didier Deschamps is set to step down after the 2026 World Cup.
Zinedine Zidane is has been heavily linked with the Bleu managerial role, so Vieira may have to look elsewhere if his time in Genoa comes to an end.
