Inter Milan’s Record Without Denzel Dumfries Shouldn’t Concern The Nerazzurri Ahead Of The Derby

The latest Denzel Dumfries injury update has revealed the Inter Milan star is almost certain to miss the derby on November 23. 

However, should Inter supporters be worried? The Nerazzurri’s record without their star full-back indicates that they often make do without the 29-year-old.

Denzel Dumfries Injury

Whilst on international duty with the Netherlands earlier this month, Denzel Dumfries suffered an ankle injury. The Inter Milan defender returned to Appiano Gentile last week to help aid his recovery.

However, the strain has taken longer than expected to heal and it’s extremely unlikely he’ll feature against AC Milan. Dumfries will probably miss the Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid on November 26, too.

Head coach Cristian Chivu is set to replace Dumfries with Carlos Augusto. The Brazilian – who typically plays on the left-hand side – has filled in on the right in recent weeks and is likely to transition again.

If Chivu decides against that, Manuel Akanji may also be considered. Predominantly a center-back, the Manchester City loanee can also operate as a right-back.

Inter Milan’s Record Without Denzel Dumfries

As much as Inter Milan supporters will want to see Denzel Dumfries feature in the Milan derby – which is set to be the highest-grossing Serie A match ever – the history books show they can manage without him.

Since joining Inter in 2021, Dumfries has only missed 15 matches through injury. Across those games, the Nerazzurri have only tasted defeat on four occasions.

Those losses came against Bologna (2), Bayer Leverkusen and ironically, AC Milan. The 3-0 loss to the Rossoneri occurred last season in the semi-final 2nd leg of the Coppa Italia.

Their first loss to the Rossoblu also came in the Italian Cup. The other came in Serie A which is the only time they have been beaten in the league without Dumfries available.

The loss to Leverkusen came in last season’s Champions League. That result had little bearing on Inter who comfortably secured a top-eight finish.

In terms of victories, the Nerazzurri has six to their name. Therefore, giving a win percentage of 40%. The other five fixtures have ended in stalemate.

What Other Injuries Do Inter Milan Have Going Into The Derby?

Alongside Denzel Dumfries, Inter Milan has a number of injuries in their roster. Piotr Zielinski is a doubt having also sustained a knock whilst on international duty with Poland.

Fellow midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan will miss out with a hamstring injury. The Armenian is set to be available for selection in December.

Matteo Darmian has returned after an extended absence but he is unlikely to be in the squad as he aims to build up his fitness. Goalkeeper Raffaele Di Gennaro and defender Tomas Palacios are also ruled out.
