Serie A CEO Provides Controversial Update Over Australia Plans

The proposition of taking Serie A outside of Italy has split opinion since UEFA gave permission for AC Milan to face Como in Perth during a board meeting in October.

These Serie A sides will go head-to-head in February 2026 and the idea of hosting the match in Australia came after San Siro was selected to hold the 2026 Winter Olympic Games opening ceremony.

Massimiliano Allegri, who is at risk of receiving an extended ban after being dismissed against Lazio, believes the match should be played in Italy and Cesc Fabregas is also against the move to Perth.

Despite these issues, Luigi De Siervo has continued to express a desire to host a Serie A match in Australia and the Italian revealed at the Gran Gala del Calcio awards that hosting Milan vs Como in Perth will be a long-term benefit.

Luigi De Siervo said: “We hope so! It is an innovative project, which some have understood and others have not. It means making a small sacrifice for great medium to long-term benefits. We are working on the final authorizations, we still need FIFA to give the OK.

“We mustn’t only look at the short-term, let us not forget that on the other side of the world there is a country with a huge Italian immigrant population that continues to have passion for our football.”

Hosting a match in Australia would mark a moment in history for Serie A as there have never been a competitive league match outside of Italy – but the financial gain is a huge aspect for both sides.

Milan and Como To Receive Huge Payday For Perth Clash

AC Milan vs Como is set to generate €12million in revenue, but after a variety of expenses, the two Serie A sides will share a reported €9m – with the Rossoneri receiving the largest share.

The other 18 teams in Serie A will also receive a small percentage of this revenue, which has made multiple sides vote for the proposition.

Receiving a financial boost will be a huge positive for multiple teams in Italy, as the likes of Inter Milan look to make some major signings in 2026.

The Nerazzurri have been linked with some star names ahead of the January window, with Inter targeting James Trafford to replace Yann Sommer.

However the largest share will be heading to the other half of Milan in order to cover losses from playing away from San Siro.

Massimiliano Allegri’s side currently sit top of Serie A after 13 matches, while Como are unbeaten in their last 10 league matches – meaning their clash in February could be crucial at the top of Italy’s elite division.
