Paul Ince Lists Liverpool Weaknesses Inter Can Exploit In Champions League

Inter and Liverpool icon Paul Ince has spoken about the weaknesses in the Reds camp that Cristian Chivu’s Nerazzurri can exploit in the Champions League.

Inter are the favourites to get the better of Liverpool at San Siro on Tuesday night, with Arne Slot’s side in dire straits at present.

While the Nerazzurri are flying high in the Champions League and Serie A, Liverpool are floundering on both fronts.

In addition, Mohamed Salah’s explosive interview last week caused a stir among the Anfield faithful – and Salah will not be involved against Inter.

Ince, who played for both Inter and Liverpool during his illustrious playing career, explained where exactly things are going wrong for the Reds.

The former England midfielder noted how the Reds’ defence, once a near-unbreakable wall, is no longer the force it used to be due to individual mistakes.

“For years, Liverpool’s strength was their defence: they conceded few goals, and made very few individual mistakes,” Ince told Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Now, however, we see so many personal mistakes, goals conceded through carelessness and lack of concentration.

Ince also explained how losing the likes of Luis Diaz and Trent Alexander-Arnold appears to have weakened Liverpool considerably.

“Let’s not forget the significant transfers: they lost Luis Diaz, who went to Bayern Munich, and Trent Alexander-Arnold, who ended up at Real Madrid,” Ince continued.

“They were two key players; replacing them is not easy, even if you invest huge sums in new signings.”

Liverpool were near-unstoppable last season, cruising to their second Premier League title of the decade.

Many pre-season predictions had Arne Slot’s side down as title favourites, along with backing them for cup success.

However, the Reds simply haven’t delivered this season, and Ince believes that there is too much uncertainty among the players with regards to playing time.

This is something that Inter can take advantage of, added the former Nerazzurri and Liverpool icon.

“In his first year, Arne Slot handled Klopp’s legacy very well, but now he wants to impose his philosophy in a different context,” said Ince.

“In the meantime, new players have arrived, some very expensive, who have to settle in: finding the right balance becomes a problem.

“For me, the big issue is that there isn’t a standard line-up yet.

“One week someone starts, the next week he’s on the bench, then he comes back in a different role… that creates confusion.

“From this point of view, Inter know they will certainly have opportunities and, when they come, they will have to exploit them.”
