Jose Mourinho Names The Serie A Title Challenger He Thinks Will Fall Short In Scudetto Race
Milan, Napoli Inter and Roma are all in the Scudetto picture.
Jose Mourinho has given his thoughts on the Serie A title race between Milan, Napoli, Inter and Roma, naming the team he doesn’t think will win.
Jose Mourinho predicts three-way Serie A title race between Milan, Napoli and Inter
The Serie A title race has shaped up very nicely, with Milan, Napoli, Inter and Roma all firmly in the picture.
Milan are currently at the summit on goal difference, with Napoli sitting in second and both teams on 31 points.
Inter are third in the standings on 30 points, while Roma are in fourth place on 27 points.
There are also three outsiders who are still within reach – Bologna are on 25 points, Como are on 24 points, and Juventus are on 23 points.
Mourinho is no stranger to winning a Serie A title, having triumphed in 2008/09 and 2009/10 with Inter.
And speaking after he steered Benfica to a Champions League victory over Napoli, Mourinho backed his former side to be in the hunt once again.
The Portuguese predicted a three-horse race between the Nerazzurri, Milan and Napoli.
While Mourinho said he would love Roma – another former club of his – to win the Scudetto, he doesn’t feel they’ll last the distance.
“It’s difficult,” Mourinho said when asked to predict the title winner, as per Tuttomercatoweb.
“Inter have so much potential with a superb squad. Napoli are the same. Milan play once a week and have a fantastic coach in Max (Allegri).
“He can coach in a manner unlike Cristian (Chivu) and Antonio (Conte) because they’ve got so many games to play.
“Sadly, I think it’ll be between those three. I would love to be able to go to the Circus Maximus (in Rome), but I don’t think so.”
When each of the Serie A title contenders last won the Scudetto
Napoli have had their fair share of ups and downs throughout the years, but they have been absolutely flying over the past few seasons.
The Partenopei are the reigning champions and, prior to last season’s triumph, had lifted the Scudetto in 2022/23.
Mourinho had hailed Scott McTominay after his Napoli side were beaten by Mourinho’s Benfica.
Inter stood in Napoli’s way in 2023/24, stopping the south Italian side from winning three in a row.
The Nerazzurri also lifted the Scudetto in 2020/21, finally halting Juventus’ title dominance.
Meanwhile, Milan triumphed in 2021/22, while Roma would end a 25-year wait for the title, having last lifted it in 2000/01.
Although Juventus have the ‘phenomenal’ Kenan Yildiz – as David Luiz said – they’re unlikely to be in the picture this season.
