AC Milan are eyeing up a move for Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin if Mike Maignan leaves next summer.

Mike Maignan’s Contract Stand-Off

As reported by FootItalia, Milan are hopeful Maignan will sign a new contract. However, he is yet to put pen to paper, forcing the club to sound out potential replacements.

Negotiations with Massimiliano Allegri’s No 1 stalled in December, despite his deal running down in June.

Maignan is said to have been given until February to make a decision on his future, while La Gazzetta dello Sport believe a breakthrough could be close, with Milan drawing up a ‘super offer’.

This extension would see him commit to the San Siro until 2029, with an option for a further year. The significant package is worth around €7million a season net, bonuses included.

Should he agree to the contract, he would effectively be tied with Rafael Leao as Milan’s highest-paid player.

But a sense of uncertainty still remains, and the Rossoneri have now identified a possible replacement.

AC Milan Want Andriy Lunin

According to Defensa Central, Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin has emerged as a serious option for Milan.

Lunin moved to the Bernabeu from Ukrainian side Zorya Luhansk as a 19-year-old back in 2018, for a reported overall fee of €12.5m.

His father confirmed that Napoli had also been in touch, only for Madrid to beat them to the chase. The now 26-year-old signed a long-term contract extension until 2030, but could leave over the coming months.

The same report claims Milan would be willing to splash out between €10m and €15m to secure his signature.

Earlier this month, FootItalia revealed that Allegri admires Lunin and is hopeful that Luka Modric, who joined Milan as a free agent after leaving Madrid, could help in sealing a potential deal.

Milan Working On Contract Extensions

Milan are hopeful Maignan will pen fresh terms, especially with a sizeable financial package on the table, and Allegri revealed before the 3-0 win over Hellas Verona that discussions are ongoing behind the scenes.

“Maignan is important, like all those with more experience,” Allegri said.

“The club is working for the future and to keep Milan at a certain level; surely, there will be extensions of important players. The club is working and is focused on this.”

Maignan addressed his future during the Italian Super Cup, insisting he is not allowing himself to be distracted by the speculation. But regardless, he will be pushed to make a final decision in the near future.
