Napoli have joined Juventus in the race to sign Liverpool and Italy winger Federico Chiesa, according to reports.
Chiesa has struggled for minutes at Liverpool this season, making just three starts and clocking up 469 minutes.
Juventus have been after Chiesa – who they sold to Liverpool in 2024 – as they look to climb up the Serie A table.
However, the Bianconeri are not the only club with their eyes on Chiesa this month.
Napoli want Federico Chiesa but finances are tricky
Antonio Conte has approved the idea of bringing Chiesa to Napoli this month, according to TMW’s Enzo Bucchioni.
Chiesa is open to returning to Serie A to relaunch his form and boost his Azzurri prospects, after limited minutes in England.
However, there’s a considerable stumbling block for Napoli relating to the finances of the deal.
Chiesa reportedly earns around €7.5m per season, a figure that makes any Italian deal complicated.
Napoli are looking at a creative structure, with reports suggesting a loan could be the most realistic route if Liverpool soften their stance.
However, Fabrizio Romano and Matteo Moretto have reported that Liverpool only want a loan with obligation to buy.
The duo have claimed that Napoli have had direct contact with Chiesa’s entourage through sporting director Giovanni Manna.
However, as things stand, things could be tricky for the Partenopei, while Juve are said to be “absolutely at the table”.
Meanwhile, Serie A rivals Inter are not in the Chiesa race, the Italian journalists added.
How Napoli can raise funds for Chiesa
Romano said Napoli simply cannot commit to an obligation to buy as things stand, but things could change over the coming weeks.
He said the Azzurri could raise funds through player sales. Lorenzo Lucca and Noa Lang are among those who could be sold.
Bucchioni corroborated Romano’s reports, saying Manna wants to ‘recoup the €70m’ spent on both players to reinvest elsewhere.
“It’s not easy, obviously,” he added, acknowledging that Napoli need to find buyers willing to splash the cash.
As things stand, Napoli’s interest in Chiesa is still at an exploratory stage, while Juventus’ interest appears more concrete.
However, things can change quickly in the transfer window. Therefore, it’s certainly a case of watching this space for any developments.
