1000 Serie A points. Elite tactics. Zero shortcuts. Gasperini’s rise from setbacks to legend status proves why he’s one of Italy’s most influential coaches.
Gian Piero Gasperini Reaches 1000 Points in Serie A
Gian Piero Gasperini is only the third coach in the three-points-for-a-win era to reach 1000 points in Serie A, after Massimiliano Allegri (1050) and Luciano Spalletti (1014). This amazing achievement just goes to show what a great manager Gasperini is. He’s up there with the most influential managers in Italian football right now, and he’s shown he can do the job well for a number of clubs.

From Setbacks to Silverware: Gasperini’s Coaching Journey
Gasperini’s coaching career has been a bit of a rollercoaster, but the Roma manager is finally getting the credit he deserves. Indeed, he started out coaching at Juventus, where he coached the youth team before moving to Crotone from 2003 to 2006. Then, it was his time to join Genoa where and he got them promoted to Serie A in his first season. The next season, his tactics and management helped the team finish fifth in Serie A, the best they’ve done in 19 years. After his brief stint at Inter Milan didn’t go to plan (he got the sack after three games with no wins), Gasperini started again at Palermo, then moved to Atalanta, where he made his mark on the European stage by winning the Europa League in 2023-24.
Why Gasperini Tactics Changed Italian Football
Gasperini was into Ajax’s style of play in the 1990s, which was all about the 3-3-3-1 formation with loads of movement without the ball, players switching positions all the time, and absolutely killer skills in one-on-one battles. Afterwards, Gasperini’s 3-4-2-1 rely a lot on the advanced playmaker’s movements when he doesn’t have the ball, to help create more players on one of the two flanks. This kind of solution help the team make the most of the half-spaces created by the advanced playmaker and use triangular passes to break through towards the other team’s final third. Players with the ball can move into empty spaces, which gives the wing-back the chance to exchange short passes with them. This allows the wing-back to find space and time to advance and receive the ball again.
