Roma and Fiorentina Fans Banned From Attending Away Matches After Motorway Conflict

Roma and Fiorentina fans have been banned from away matches for the rest of the 2025/26 campaign after a violent conflict on January 18th.

The two Serie A sides have been handed a strong punishment by the Italian Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi and Serie A President Ezio Simonelli.
On Sunday 18th January, Fiorentina fans travelled to Bologna while Roma supporters headed to Turin to face Torino in GW2 of Serie A.
Around 200 supporters crossed paths near Casalecchio di Reno and this encounter would lead to a major conflict – which required intervention from the police.
Members of the Italian soccer hierarchy met to discuss the necessary punishment and Ezio Simonelli revealed why both sets of supporters will be unable to attend away matches this season.
Ezio Simonelli said: “What happened on the highway is very serious. Italian football cannot allow itself to be mixed with criminal matters and clashes that endanger the health not only of those participating, but also of those who must intervene to break them up.”
Both Roma and Fiorentina are competing in Europe this season, with the Giallorossi sitting 10th in the Europa League and La Viola taking up 15th in the Europa Conference League.
Early reports have revealed that supporters will not only be banned from Serie A away matches, but also European encounters on the road.
The Giallorossi have been in the headlines in the opening stages of 2026, after rejecting the opportunity to sign Nuno Tavares from Lazio and sending Leon Bailey back to Aston Villa.
Fiorentina have started to find form after recording their worst start to a Serie A season, moving out of the relegation zone for the first time after a 2-1 win over Bologna.
Continuing these performances will be difficult without any away support and both of these Serie A sides are reportedly looking to appeal the decision before January comes to a close.
Serie A Sides To Appeal Ban Decision
Pisa and Hellas Verona fans were banned from attending away matches for three-months in October 2025, but this suspension was eventually lifted after criticism from Serie A officials.
Roma and Fiorentina are hoping to receive a similar outcome by making an appeal to the Italian soccer hierarchy – which could decrease the suspension greatly.
Fiorentina will divert their attention to an appeal immediately and halt their pursuit of Sikou Niakate while Paolo Vanoli looks to extend the gap from the bottom three.
As for Roma, the priority will shift to an appeal after their Europa League clash against VFB Stuttgart on January 22nd and Gian Piero Gasperini is hoping to bring in some more reinforcements this month.
The two Italian sides are yet to comment on the matter, but also face an issue as Part of the issue they have not honed in on supporters that have been involved in conflict.
