Atalanta Star Considers Premier League Move As Dutchman Slams ‘Immature’ Teammates
After a scathing rant towards his Atalanta teammates, Marten de Roon is now considering a move to the Premier League.
Marten de Roon has sparked rumors over a move to the Premier League as the Dutchman slammed his Atalanta teammates after a 3-2 defeat by Athletic Club.
Marten De Roon Slams ‘Immature’ Atalanta
The 34-year-old issued a scathing rant after Atalanta threw away a 1-0 lead at home to Athletic Club in the Champions League on January 21st, as the Dutchman labelled the team ‘immature’.
Atalanta dropped to 13th in the table and will need to secure three-points on the final day of the group stages to have any chance of finishing in the automatic qualification places.
La Dea let a 1-0 lead slip in their latest Serie A clash also, playing out a 1-1 stalemate with Pisa on January 16th, while also struggling to show signs of a ruthless side in their 2-0 win over Torino a week prior.
Raffaele Palladino’s side scored in the 13th minute against Torino and waited until the 95th to add a second, something De Roon highlighted after the club’s Champions League defeat.
De Roon said: “We had a similar situation against Torino, when we dominated the first half and only scored one goal. We need to kill the games off when we have that control.
“I think the problem is that we lack maturity, when you are under pressure, you have to hold on. Instead, we got scared, we vanished from the pitch, and this is very bad.”
Issues in front of goal have been highlighted by Raffaele Palladino’s transfer targets, as Atalanta target Richarlison in hopes of bringing in a regular source of goals.
Although signing another attacking reinforcement will soften De Roon’s concerns, the Dutchman is reportedly considering a move away at the end of the season.
De Roon Considers Premier League Move
The 34-year-old’s contract with Atalanta is set to expire in June and there have been no talks over an extended deal ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
De Roon has been a vital player for La Dea for multiple seasons now, making 421 appearances for the Serie A side since joining the club in August 2017.
The Dutchman is still regarded as an important member of the Atalanta member, holding the captain’s armband and starting in 17 Serie A matches this season.
Atalanta are looking to tie players down to new deals in 2026, as Ademola Lookman considers a new contract but De Roon could force a move away after attracting interest from Newcastle.
The Magpies are monitoring De Roon’s situation in hopes of signing the Dutchman for free in the summer, as Eddie Howe prepares for a squad overhaul.
Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes have been linked with moves away from Newcastle, meaning the Magpies will need to make multiple midfield signings.
