Gattuso Rules Out Icardi Move for Lazio Despite Free Agency

Gennaro Gattuso has closed the door on any prospect of Lazio signing Mauro Icardi, telling reporters the club have already committed to their forward line and won’t go back on those decisions now that the transfer window has shut across Europe.

Icardi’s contract with Galatasaray expired in June 2026, leaving him free to join any club regardless of the closed transfer market. His representatives held talks with Lazio during the summer, and according to Sky Sport Italia those discussions were reopened only last week, fuelling speculation over a possible move to the Stadio Olimpico.

However, Gattuso moved to end the speculation at a press conference on Friday, insisting the matter is settled. Speaking via Calciomercato.com, he said: “Let’s put this whole Icardi mess to rest. He has scored 250 goals in his career, and nobody questions his value. We made our choices; we signed Pinamonti and Gudmundsson, and when you give your word to players, you can’t go back on it. With all due respect to Icardi, I’ve discussed it with the president and the director, and it’s right to stick to what we have.”

The Lazio coach also pointed to a squad imbalance elsewhere as a reason to avoid further additions, highlighting the club’s glut of full-backs. “Right now, we already have players who have to sit out training because we have six full-backs,” Gattuso explained. “When Marusic returns, two of them will have to be left out, and that doesn’t look good.”

Icardi, 33, remains a proven goalscorer at the highest level of Italian football, having netted 121 goals in 219 Serie A appearances across spells with Sampdoria and Inter. His most recent Serie A action came in a Champions League knockout play-off tie for Galatasaray against Juventus in February 2026, underlining that he retains top-flight pedigree despite his advancing years.

For Lazio, the focus now shifts back to matters on the pitch, where Gattuso’s side have made a solid start to the season with three wins and a draw from their opening four Serie A fixtures. They travel to face struggling Venezia at the Stadio Penzo on Saturday, 19 September, looking to maintain their early-season momentum.

Gattuso was appointed Lazio head coach last summer on a one-year deal running through the end of the campaign, with the club holding the option to extend his stay for a further season. His firm stance on the Icardi situation suggests he is keen to build squad cohesion around the players already committed to the project, including summer signings Andrea Pinamonti and Albert Gudmundsson.
