Bologna hit by Injury crisis as Italiano prepares for Genoa clash

Start

Bologna manager Vincenzo Italiano faced the media today ahead of his team’s Serie A match against Genoa, revealing a mounting injury crisis that has hit the squad. The coach expressed his disappointment at losing several key players just as they returned from international duty.

“Unfortunately, that’s how it is,” Italiano began. “We always talk about how during breaks we can work well, then when the internationals return they come back with some minutes in their legs. But this time we lose Aebischer, Ndoye, Iling and Erlic. Lucumi returned today and worked separately. We work one game at a time, we’ll be ready, but I’m very sorry about this situation with the return of the internationals. We’ll have many commitments in the next 20 days, I’m not happy about it.”

The coach provided details on the injuries, explaining, “Aebischer has an adductor problem, Ndoye is overloaded with fatigue, Erlic has a lesion, Iling has something similar to Pobega’s collateral ligament issue. These are discomforts that then take time to go away.”

Despite the setbacks, Italiano remains focused on the task at hand. “We have to start drawing energy and performances from some players who have given less and had little space. We needed to wait for them. I knew and know that there can be difficulties in this journey.”

When asked about improving the team’s attack, Italiano emphasized the need for better finishing and creativity. “We need to be better in the final touch, put our teammates in a position to score. We’ve talked about this with the players. Goals must also come from midfielders, set pieces, defenders, in situations where we need to optimize.”

The coach also addressed the situation of specific players, including Karlsson, Freuler, and Odgaard, highlighting their progress and potential contributions to the team.

Looking ahead to the match against Genoa, Italiano acknowledged the challenge: “Tomorrow two teams that need to make points will face each other. We’ll see who will be hungrier than the other. At Marassi, we’ll first need to match this desire to make points, then whoever is better will win the game, but we must have the same hunger as them.”

Italiano concluded by touching on the upcoming Champions League match against Birmingham, stating, “We’ll think about it from tomorrow. I hope to recover someone like Ndoye, but let’s focus on the league and tomorrow’s game.”
