Former AC Milan, Juventus, and Roma coach Fabio Capello offered a scathing assessment of Milan’s performance following their heavy defeat against Liverpool in the opening match of the new Champions League format. Speaking to Sky Sport, Capello expressed his disappointment and concern over the team’s lackluster display.
“I feel dejected watching this Milan, without any reaction, incapable of stringing three passes together,” Capello stated, highlighting the team’s lack of response to adversity.
The veteran coach was particularly critical of Milan’s playing style and their inability to involve their striker effectively. “We continue to play a style of football that’s too attached to the goalkeeper, who touched the ball more than Morata. Without courage, you don’t go anywhere,” he remarked.
Capello also pointed out the glaring absence of leadership on the field. “It’s clear that everyone plays, but there’s no leader. Do you know who was the leader tonight? Abraham,” he said, referring to the Liverpool player who came on as a substitute.
Regarding Rafael Leao, Milan’s star player, Capello noted, “Leao’s only notable play came at the end. You have a player who can trouble the opponents, and you don’t use him. His first touch of the ball came in the 20th minute.”
The former coach concluded his analysis with a stark admission: “All of this gives me little confidence in this Milan team.”
