Champions League draw set for August 29 as teams prepare for new format

Start

The draw for the 2024-25 Champions League season is set to take place on Thursday, August 29, 2024, following the conclusion of the final qualification matches.

Champions League Draw

The Champions League draw is scheduled for 17:00 BST on Thursday. Fans can watch the event live via streaming on the official Champions League website and the UEFA YouTube channel.

New Champions League Format

This season introduces a revamped format featuring 36 teams competing in a league phase instead of the traditional group stage. The teams are divided into four pots and will face eight different opponents, ensuring they play against two teams from each pot. Importantly, teams from the same country will not meet during this phase.

Points are awarded as before—three for a win, one for a draw, and none for a loss. However, the points will now be compared across all teams in the competition rather than within smaller groups. The top eight teams at the end of the league phase will advance directly to the round of 16. Teams ranked ninth to 24th will enter an additional knockout round, with the winners joining the knockout stages.

This season, five Italian teams will participate in the Champions League, reflecting Italy’s strong UEFA coefficient ranking. The teams are Inter, Juventus, Milan, Atalanta, and Bologna.

– Pot 1 includes Inter alongside Real Madrid, Manchester City, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool, Borussia Dortmund, RB Leipzig, and Barcelona.
– Pot 2 features Juventus, Milan, and Atalanta, along with Bayer Leverkusen, Atletico Madrid, Benfica, Arsenal, Club Brugge, and Shakhtar Donetsk.
– Pot 3 consists of Feyenoord, Sporting CP, PSV Eindhoven, Dinamo Zagreb, RB Salzburg, Lille, Red Star Belgrade, Young Boys, and Celtic.
– Pot 4 includes Bologna, Slovan Bratislava, AS Monaco, Sparta Prague, Aston Villa, Girona, Stuttgart, Sturm Graz, and Brest.
