Ademola Lookman has been urged to make a move to La Liga by his fellow countryman, Mutiu Adepoju, as the Atalanta star looks for a move this summer.
Will Ademola Lookman Leave Atalanta?
The Nigerian superstar has been one of Atalanta’s leading talisman in recent years, but rumors over a move away from Bergamo have started to circulate.
Gian Piero Gasperini left the club after the 2024/25 season came to a close, opting to take the reins at Roma and the veteran manager was a big part of Lookman’s career in Italy.
Since signing for Atalanta in August 2022, the former Premier League star has made 118 appearances for the Bergamo-based side and contributed to 77G (52G + 25A).
His most notable performance came in the 2024 Europa League final, as Lookman became the first player in history to score a hat-trick and secured Atalanta’s first European trophy.
Lookman’s 2024/25 campaign was another strong performance, contributing to 27 goals in 40 appearances across all competitions and helped Atalanta qualify for the Champions League once again.
The Nigerian’s deal with Atalanta does not expire until June 2027, but Mutiu Adepoju believes Lookman should ignore this and aim for a move away this summer.
Adepoju said: “Despite having a contract with Atalanta, I think the time is ripe for him to move to another league as I do not think he has anything else to prove in Italy.
“Lookman needs a new adventure to take him to the next level. And even if he remains with the Italian side, it will not be a bad idea. But I do not mind him seeking greener pastures elsewhere next season.”
If Atalanta do decide to let Lookman go, then Ivan Juric has already identified Tyler Dibling as a possible replacement after their work together with Southampton last season.
Could Ademola Lookman Move To La Liga?
Lookman would be highly sought after this summer, as the Nigerian’s recent performances over the last few years have cemented his place as one of the most lethal forwards in Europe.
A move back to the Premier League is often linked with players that came through the ranks in England, but a return to the UK’s leading division is not the only option.
Atletico Madrid have been linked with a move for the 27-year-old in previous transfer windows and may be a smarter move than the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid.
The two Spanish giants are once again the favorites to win the La Liga title on the best betting apps and may not be looking to spend around $60-70 million on Lookman this summer.
Villarreal earned a place in the Champions League for the first time since 2022 and may be keen on strengthening their side with the funds accumulated from European qualification.
Adepoju made 175 appearances in La Liga for Real Sociedad, Racing Santander and Salamanca, meaning his knowledge of the league is to be respected – especially after his comments which urged Lookman to move to the Spanish top division.
Adepoju said: “Of recent, Lookman has done very well for Atalanta and the national team, the Super Eagles and I think if he continues with Atalanta, it won’t be a bad thing.
“But if he has to move, I would like to see him in a bigger club either in La Liga or the Premier League. He has done greatly and deserves to play in a bigger club — and I believe he will make it anywhere.”
Atalanta have received no offers for Lookman at this current moment in time, but the addition of Kamaldeen Sulemana may push the Nigerian into an exit this summer.
