The third day of Napoli’s training camp in Dimaro-Folgarida saw head coach Antonio Conte addressing the media, discussing his initial impressions of the team, the first three signings of the summer transfer window, and his vision for the upcoming season:
How satisfied are you with the start of the transfer market and the first three reinforcements? Were these profiles recommended by you?
Conte: “In the transfer market, as in other areas, we are demonstrating a clear vision. For a club like Napoli, it’s crucial to operate with both the present and the future in mind. Rafa Marin and Buongiorno are young talents with good prospects and can be mainstays for years. We also seized a great opportunity with Spinazzola. We’re conducting the market the right way, as Napoli should.”
Did you notice any mental residue from last season?
Conte: “It’s inevitable that not everything is gone. Last season was truly disappointing in every aspect. I’ve tried to put it behind us and focus on the revolution ahead, but we mustn’t forget that season. It should remain in our memory to make us more experienced.”
You mentioned having an ‘angry face.’ Is anyone showing more effort?
Conte: “I’ve found very responsible players who understand their mistakes. When we win, we all win; when we lose, we all lose—club, fans, players. The guys have reflected and seem more experienced. I saw some disappointment in their eyes when discussing last year.”
Osimhen presented himself with the right attitude. How do you see him?
Conte: “After my signing, the hardest part was realigning everything and bringing Napoli back to the forefront. Victor Osimhen is a professional and an excellent player. He knows nothing has changed and understands his role at Napoli. Although there’s an agreement we still don’t know the outcome of, he’s here with a smile, focused on the present.”
Napoli is the third favorite but finished 40 points behind the leader. Is the gap closed?
Conte: “In two days of work, it’s difficult (laughs). The gap was significant, with 41 points from Inter and up to 15 from the fifth for the Champions League. Predictions must be reasonable. Zielinski’s departure to Inter, who finished 41 points ahead, also impacts. We might lose Osimhen, a key player. These predictions don’t bother me; we’ll concentrate on improving and returning to European competitions, which is a realistic goal.”
How are you experiencing this training camp?
Conte: “It’s been a long time since I’ve experienced a camp among the fans, reminding me of when I started. These emotions are strong, seeing a photo of my Siena team when we won Serie B brings back memories. These emotions are doing me good.”
What does realigning the club entail?
Conte: “After a failed year, presenting as Italian champions, it’s clear mistakes were made. Victory and defeat change dynamics. The president was deeply disappointed. My role is to ensure not everything is questioned because good values don’t disappear in a year. It’s about aligning everything for immediate competitiveness.”
What are your thoughts on closing the gaps the team struggled with, and how will Buongiorno help?
Conte: “The market is about improving the squad for the present and future. Buongiorno is a sought-after player. Securing him shows we can attract talent even without Europe. The club maintains its strategy; we will invest sale proceeds in new acquisitions. I’ve seen that with our base, we can achieve great things.”
Can you clarify your statement about ‘commanding’?
Conte: “On technical aspects, I must have a say. The president promised this, and he’s kept his word. The club acted rightly. Di Lorenzo and Kvara were crucial, and my role was to ensure we didn’t waste years of work.”
You mentioned two tactical solutions. Can you elaborate?
Conte: “We’ll work on formations adaptable to both a back four and back three. Depending on the need for balance, we can switch tactics without changing formations. The market strategy reflects this idea, aiming for intensity and adaptability.”
Do you expect another midfielder given Zielinski’s departure?
Conte: “Lobotka and Anguissa are among the strongest duos today. Behind them, we have players like Cajuste, who needs more aggression, and Folorunsho, who can become important. I’m evaluating Gaetano, and decisions will be made accordingly.”
How important is a good start to shake off disappointment?
Conte: “A strong start boosts morale and confidence, but it’s about building something lasting. Early success is important, but consistency throughout the season is key.”
What role will Oriali play?
Conte: “Oriali is my right-hand man, someone with immense experience. He helps with player management and also liaises with directors and the president. I’m glad he’s joined us with enthusiasm.”
Last season’s preparation wasn’t great. How are the tests going?
Conte: “We’ve started working correctly, both tactically and physically. Aggressive football requires physical readiness. We’ll continue with proven methodologies, adapting as necessary.”
Which department needs immediate adjustment?
Conte: “Conceding 48 goals isn’t just a defense issue but about the overall defensive phase. We lacked ferocity compared to two years ago. It’s about regaining that intensity and determination.”
What are your expectations for Raspadori and Lindstrom?
Conte: “Lindstrom will play in a role suited to his strengths, similar to his position at Eintracht. Raspadori, too, will play centrally rather than on the wing. We’ll create conditions for them to excel.”
Conte’s insights reflect a strategic and thoughtful approach to rebuilding Napoli, emphasizing a blend of experience, tactical flexibility, and maintaining a strong club identity despite the challenges ahead.
